Parent video: How to say the sounds

Set 1 sounds:

Set 1 Sounds are taught in the following order together with rhymes to help children form the letters correctly and instantly recognise sounds ready for blending.

Set 2 and 3 sounds:

The children are then taught Set 2 Sounds - the long vowels. When they are very confident with all of set 1 and 2 they are taught Set 3 Sounds.

Within all the  RWI sessions/books children will be exposed to red and green words to learn to help them to become speedy readers. Red words are words that are not easily decodable and challenge words to extend children’s vocabulary. Green words are linked to the sounds they have been learning and are easily decodable.
Below are links to green words for each set and red words as well as fun songs to help your child learn their red words.

Set 1 Red words

Set 2 Red words

Set 3 Red words

Alien words:

Along side learning sounds, children will have opportunities to apply their sound knowledge to 'alien' words. These are not real words, but they contain the sounds children will learn in RWI. These words allow children to consolidate and practice their sounds. These types of words are part of the Year On Phonics Screening check in the summer term.

Reading books:
In school your child will be reading a book suited to their knowledge and application of sounds they have been taught. Below are the different book colours your child will read on their RWI journey.

Non-Fiction Books:

To support your child's reading, they will be coming home with a non-fiction books, of their choice, to share with you. This book is linked to the sounds they are learning in their RWI lessons in school. They will choose a book on Monday and we ask that they bring it back on the Friday of the same week. Over the week please encourage your child to read the book 3 times to build their fluency. Encourage your child to use 'Fred' talk to decode unknown words.
At the front of each book you will find green and red words that will appear in the book, please read them with your child. At the back of the book you will find speed words to read with your child.
