RWI- Read, Write Inc
Welcome to our phonics page, where we take pride in nurturing a love for learning, especially when it comes to the fundamental skill of reading. The renowned Read Write Inc. (RWI) phonics scheme is at the heart of our English success, a program that has significantly contributed to our outstanding academic results. Our commitment to excellence in education is mirrored in the achievements of our students, and we are excited to share the key to our success with you. The RWI approach has proven to be a game-changer in developing strong phonetic foundations, ensuring that every child learns to read and embraces its joy. As partners in your child's educational journey, we are dedicated to supporting you in extending the benefits of RWI beyond the classroom. Let's create a seamless bridge between school and home to empower your children with the gift of literacy.
Set 1 sounds:
Set 1 Sounds are taught in the following order together with rhymes to help children form the letters correctly and instantly recognise sounds ready for blending.
Set 2 and 3 sounds:
The children are then taught Set 2 Sounds - the long vowels. When they are very confident with all of set 1 and 2 they are taught Set 3 Sounds.
Within all the RWI sessions/books children will be exposed to red and green words to learn to help them to become speedy readers. Red words are words that are not easily decodable and challenge words to extend children’s vocabulary. Green words are linked to the sounds they have been learning and are easily decodable.
Below are links to green words for each set and red words as well as fun songs to help your child learn their red words.
Along side learning sounds, children will have opportunities to apply their sound knowledge to 'alien' words. These are not real words, but they contain the sounds children will learn in RWI. These words allow children to consolidate and practice their sounds. These types of words are part of the Year On Phonics Screening check in the summer term.
In school your child will be reading a book suited to their knowledge and application of sounds they have been taught. Below are the different book colours your child will read on their RWI journey.
To support your child's reading, they will be coming home with a non-fiction books, of their choice, to share with you. This book is linked to the sounds they are learning in their RWI lessons in school. They will choose a book on Monday and we ask that they bring it back on the Friday of the same week. Over the week please encourage your child to read the book 3 times to build their fluency. Encourage your child to use 'Fred' talk to decode unknown words.
At the front of each book you will find green and red words that will appear in the book, please read them with your child. At the back of the book you will find speed words to read with your child.
